A Judge in the general division, Justice McKechnie joined the Court on 4 March 1999, aged 49. At the time of his appointment, he was Director of Public Prosecutions, an office he had held since 1991. Justice McKechnie previously served as a general counsel regularly representing the State in the High Court and all Western Australian courts. He was appointed a Queen's Counsel in 1989 after 15 years in practice.
He maintains a keen interest in legal education, chairing the Articles Training Programme Consultative Committee and serving on other education committees. As a visiting fellow to the University of Western Australia, he has coordinated the course in forensic advocacy for 18 years, a subject he has also taught in the USA.
Justice McKechnie is a joint author of successive editions of Criminal Law in Queensland and Western Australia.
