A special sitting of the Court of Appeal of Western Australia will be held on Tuesday, 1 February, 2005 to mark its establishment.
The ceremony will be held in Court 1 at the Supreme Court, commencing 9.30am.
The new court, which commences on Tuesday, is a division of the Supreme Court of Western Australia. It will handle all appeals which were previously dealt with by the Court of Criminal Appeal and the Full Court.
The Court of Appeal consists of six Supreme Court judges, with Justice Christopher Steytler appointed as President.
Speakers at the ceremony include the Hon David K. Malcolm AC, Chief Justice of Western Australia, and Justice Steytler.
Representatives from the State Government, the Law Society of Western Australia and the Western Australian Bar Association will also address the Court.
Only one television camera will be permitted in the courtroom. Television stations are asked to make their own pooling arrangements. Sound can be used, but no lighting will be permitted. There is no limit on the number of press photographers in the courtroom. Please do not move once proceedings commence.
