The Supreme Court of Western Australia is celebrating its centenary this weekend. The majestic building, which is on WA’s Register of Heritage Places and the Register of the National Estate, was officially opened on 8 June 1903
The Court, including courtrooms and the cells located under the courtrooms, will be open to the public on Sunday (8 June) from 1 – 4pm as part of the birthday celebrations.
A special ceremonial sitting of the Full Court of the Supreme Court will be held on Monday, 9 June, to mark the milestone.
Chief Justice David Malcolm said the Supreme Court building was a physical and symbolic representation of law and order in this state.
“The law relies heavily on tradition and precedent for its authority,” he said. “The Court represents a significant link to the development of the law in Western Australia since settlement in 1829.
“It has been the principal law court in Western Australia for 100 years, where the State’s major civil and criminal cases have been heard, including the last death sentence imposed in 1963.”
