MEDIA ALERT

re: Button v the Queen, Court of Criminal Appeal (CCA 122/00)

The Court of Criminal Appeal will deliver its judgment in the Button appeal next Monday, 25 February, 2002, at 9.30am in Court 1 at the Supreme Court.

The Court has agreed to allow limited filming, recording and press photography inside the courtroom. The media will be allowed to film and record the delivery of the judgment, which will include a summary to be read by the Hon Chief Justice David K Malcolm AC.

Filming and recording inside the courtroom will be strictly limited and must cease when the Chief Justice completes his summary.

TELEVISION -- Television footage must be pooled. Chiefs of Staff are asked to make their own pooling arrangements. Please contact me as soon as possible to discuss details on camera placement and sound requirements. Two cameras will be permitted into the courtroom -- one placed at the rear showing the bench, the second placed at the front facing the courtroom.

PRESS PHOTOGRAPHERS - Press photography must also be pooled. The West Australian newspaper has agreed to provide the pooled photographer for this purpose. Photographs taken inside the courtroom will be made available to other media organisations. Please contact the West's Photographic Editor Kerry Edwards on 9482 3641 to discuss arrangements.

RADIO - Radio reporters will be able to take sound from a 'splitter box' that will be available in the courtroom. Please contact me as soon as possible if you intend to send a representative on Monday.

We will be meeting with the Court's sound technician on Friday afternoon, 22 February (at a time to be confirmed) to ensure any recording/location issues are resolved.
